MONT ALTO, Pa. — Penn State Mont Alto is taking applications for its 11th annual MedCamp, which provides incoming ninth- and 10th-graders opportunities to learn about careers in the health care and medical fields.

This year’s MedCamp will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24, at the Mont Alto campus.

Director of Continuing Education Helen McGarry said MedCamp is offering 15 more spots this year to keep up with demand.

“Every year, we’d receive many more applications than we could accommodate, because we only had 30 spaces. It was difficult to turn away so many eligible and interested students,” McGarry said.

“In an effort to be as responsive to as many students as possible, we expanded our enrollment. This year we are pleased to add 15 more spaces to accommodate a total of 45 MedCampers,” she said.

Interested students can submit an application and letters of recommendation from two teachers to Penn State Mont Alto Continuing Education, 1 Campus Drive, Mont Alto, PA 17237 by March 31.

Notifications of acceptance into MedCamp will be mailed to students the week of April 11.

The cost of camp is $280 and includes lunch, snacks and transportation. The weeklong camp introduces participants to medical careers with hands-on activities and field trips to Penn State Hershey, Summit Health in Chambersburg, Wilson College and Shenandoah University.

Student campers will explore nursing, oncology, neurology, radiology, emergency medicine, surgery, pediatrics, physical therapy, occupational therapy and veterinary medicine.
