Penn State Mont Alto is taking applications for its 11th annual MedCamp, which provides incoming ninth- and 10th-graders opportunities to learn about careers in the health care and medical fields. This year’s MedCamp, which has expanded to 45 students, will be held June 20-24 at the Mont Alto campus.
The Penn State Mont Alto men’s basketball team won the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championship on Feb. 25 and is now representing the PSUAC during the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Championships. The event is being held at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown March 2-5.
On March 2, Penn State Mont Alto hosted a Lucina childbirth simulator demonstration by CAE Healthcare. Attending the demonstration were 11 members of the Penn State community, donors who are passionate about health care training, as well as representatives from four area hospitals. The Mont Alto campus hopes to add the simulator as a training aid for nursing students.
Penn State Mont Alto will continue its spring Colloquy Series when Kira Hamman, instructor in mathematics, presents "Mathematics and Social Justice" at 2 p.m. March 16 in the University Library. Hamman will explore the link between math and science literacy and equality in the United States. The program is open to the public and is free of charge. Coffee is provided and discussion is encouraged. The Colloquy Series presents current research by Mont Alto faculty in an informal environment at a level that is accessible to a general audience.
A group of Penn State Mont Alto Lion Ambassadors participated in a community-service project at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on March 4.
National award-winning author Phil Klay will speak at Penn State Mont Alto about his book “Redeployment” at 7 p.m. April 20 in the auditorium of the General Studies Building on campus. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Klay will sign books immediately following and light refreshments will be served. The public is also invited to attend a book club-type discussion prior to Klay’s event at 7 p.m. April 14 in the University Library.
Penn State Mont Alto will hosted a campus symposium on the topic “What is Privilege?” on March 21, in the Wiestling Student Center on campus. The program discussed privilege from all angles — what it is, who has it, who doesn’t, and what that means for our society.
The Penn State Mont Alto Office of Admissions will host its Spring Open House for prospective students and their families on April 2 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Activities Center (MAC) on campus.
On March 30, the WITF documentaries “Mira Lloyd Dock: A Beautiful Crusade” and “Gifford Pinchot’s Conservation Legacy” will provide the basis for a panel discussion about the history and future of conservation and how to develop conservation leaders for the 21st century. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the General Studies Building Auditorium at Penn State Mont Alto. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Penn State Mont Alto Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Kimberly Herrmann, as she presents her Ph.D. thesis research, “Planetary Nebulae in Spiral Galaxies: Shedding Some Light on Dark Matter,” on April 6 I the General Studies Auditorium on the University’s campus. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with original constellation riddle seating slides and the talk will begin at 7 p.m. with astronomy-themed cookies provided at 8 p.m. Weather permitting, a Star Party will follow Herrmann’s talk in the field behind the Multipurpose Activities Center (MAC) from 8:30 pm. To 10 p.m. The presentation and star party are free and open to the public.
