MONT ALTO, Pa. ― The art of Geoffrey Thulin is on exhibit through mid-December at the Penn State Mont Alto Library, second floor. Members of the community are welcome to view the show 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4 to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit includes watercolor and mixed media paintings.
The colorful paintings dramatically change the room where they hang. Thulin’s works are dynamic explorations of rhythm, pattern, and color, using watercolor, gouache, inks, graphite, charcoal and pastel ― often employing or blending three or more in one piece.
“The world around me and everything in it provides limitless possibilities for artistic inspiration and exploration,” says Thulin’s website. “I have always been drawn to the natural world at large and its connection to the spiritual. The rhythm of pattern and the role of atmosphere figure largely in my work, especially the abstracts and landscapes.”
As a 1982 Penn State graduate, Thulin said he is pleased to show his work at the Mont Alto campus at the request of Freya Qually, Penn State Mont Alto senior instructor in art.
Qually invites two or three local artists to show their work at the Mont Alto campus each year. The artwork not only enhances the campus community but also fosters and supports Qually's students creative process.
“I will bring my classes here to see the exhibit and discuss Geoff’s art,” she said.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Thulin grew up in New England, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He graduated with the highest distinction from Penn State with his bachelor’s degree in art and architecture. He has also studied at Gettysburg College and in Grebbestad, Sweden.
His work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including San Francisco, Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts), and Harrisburg, State College, and Gettysburg (Pennsylvania). It is held in private collections throughout the United States and he has received several awards.
Besides, painting, drawing and photography, Thulin is also a professional picture framer and has worked for an art museum, a high-end art gallery, and a custom woodworking shop. He lives and works in an 1849 stone farmhouse with his wife in south central Pennsylvania in the Adams County village of Cashtown.
