Penn State Mont Alto contributed $38,443,918 to the Pennsylvania economy in FY 2017, and supported, directly and indirectly, 499 Pennsylvania jobs. A new study released Feb. 26 by Penn State focused on measuring the University’s impact in communities across the Commonwealth.
An easy to build racing drone kit, a faster and easier way to mix infant formula, and a customer loyalty app were business ideas entrepreneurs pitched during the Mont Alto LaunchBox LION Tank Competition on March 15 in the University’s General Studies Building Auditorium.
The Mont Alto LaunchBox is offering free workshops for aspiring entrepreneurs on and off campus this spring. They are open to the public and free of charge. Participants are encouraged to register at montalto.psu.edu/launchbox/workshops.
Entrepreneurs across the University will pitch their business ideas and create inventive solutions to common problems through a series of competitions and challenges held during Penn State Startup Week from April 1-5. The challenges are at the heart of Startup Week’s mission of teaching and inspiring participants to make innovation a part of their lives, communities and careers, either by starting their own companies or bringing a problem-solving approach to established organizations.
On April 3, the Evening Talk Series at Penn State Mont Alto will feature “The True Story of How and Why Handel Wrote ‘Messiah.’” The talk will be presented by William (Bill) Rolar, lecturer in music, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the General Studies Auditorium on the Mont Alto campus. If weather permits, a Star Party will follow.
The new Solar Power Purchasing Agreement in partnership with Lightsource BP, announced by Penn State in February, has benefits beyond renewable energy. A national model, the agreement was designed from the start to extend its sustainability impacts to protection of the local landscape and encouraging student and faculty research.
Penn State Mont Alto will host its final Colloquy Series talk of the spring semester on April 10, when Associate Teaching Professor of Forest Technology Elizabeth Brantley will lead a tour of the Penn State Mont Alto Arboretum during a farewell reception in her honor.
Seventy-two Penn State Mont Alto students will display and present their best academic and artistic work on April 12, during the 14th annual Penn State Mont Alto Academic Festival, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Activities Center (MAC). An awards ceremony will follow in the General Studies Building auditorium at 3:45 p.m. The public is invited to attend free or charge.
Longtime Penn State Mont Alto Director of Athletics Robert "Marty" Ogle died on Friday, March 29, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Ogle served as the Mont Alto athletic director for 28 years before retiring in June of 2016.
Penn State Mont Alto honored students and faculty members achieving academic and teaching excellence during the annual Academic and Leadership Awards Ceremony in the Multipurpose Activities Center on April 7.
