On March 2, Penn State Mont Alto hosted a Lucina childbirth simulator demonstration by CAE Healthcare. Attending the demonstration were 11 members of the Penn State community, donors who are passionate about health care training, as well as representatives from four area hospitals. The Mont Alto campus hopes to add the simulator as a training aid for nursing students.
The Penn State Mont Alto men’s basketball team won the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championship on Feb. 25 and is now representing the PSUAC during the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Championships. The event is being held at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown March 2-5.
Penn State Mont Alto is taking applications for its 11th annual MedCamp, which provides incoming ninth- and 10th-graders opportunities to learn about careers in the health care and medical fields. This year’s MedCamp, which has expanded to 45 students, will be held June 20-24 at the Mont Alto campus.
Eleven Penn State Mont Alto forest technology students joined forestry instructors Beth Brantley, Craig Houghton and Peter Linehan at the Allegheny Society of American Foresters Winter Meeting Feb. 18 in Baltimore, Maryland. Highlighting the day was the students’ participation in the annual Quiz Bowl, which tested their forestry knowledge against other participating schools.
The Penn State Mont Alto International and Intercultural Programs Office invites the public to experience authentic performances from a variety of world cultures this spring. An array of dance and entertainment events will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the General Studies Auditorium on the Mont Alto campus. They are open to the public and free of charge. Light refreshments will be served.
Penn State Mont Alto’s Housing and Food Services (HFS) staff donated $420 on Feb. 17 to the campus’ Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon group, affectionately called THON. The funds were collected throughout the 2015-16 fall and spring semesters from staff members who donated $2 each Wednesday for the benefit of swapping their uniforms for Penn State T-shirts and blue jeans.
Penn State Mont Alto will celebrate Black History Month with a performance by the Zuzu African Acrobats at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the Multipurpose Activities Center on campus. The Zuzu African Acrobats show features high-energy, fast-paced acrobats from Mombasa, Kenya, in feats of pyramid building, limbo, contortion, tumbling and balancing. The public is invited to attend the event free of charge.
Penn State Mont Alto launched a Veterans’ Mentoring Program that connects veteran students with former military faculty and staff volunteers in January. The program will provide support to and mentor the student veterans transitioning to higher education and for future civilian careers.
Penn State Mont Alto will launch its Spring 2016 Colloquy Series on Feb. 10 with the first of three events when Angela Hissong, Penn State Mont Alto’s Occupational Therapy Program director presents “Engaging Mind, Body, and Spirit in Meaningful Occupations.” All colloquy events begin at 2 p.m. in the University Library.
An event held in the Heritage Room of the Millstream Café was attended by more than 80 students over the lunch hour on Jan. 27, when Penn State Mont Alto joined the University-wide launch of Stand for State — an initiative that promotes bystander intervention and provides the tools to prevent sexual and relationship violence.
