Study Groups & PASS

How can Study Groups help me?

Study groups are learning opportunities designed to support students who are enrolled in challenging courses. The study groups are led by either a peer or a professional tutor, trained in offering collaborative learning strategies to encourage student-to-student interactions. Study groups are scheduled for set times and locations throughout the semester. You are welcome to come and go from the sessions because attendance is voluntary.

Your personal preparation and regular attendance at the sessions is highly recommended. Read your course materials, bring questions to seek better understanding and clarification, and be willing to work with your peers in a group setting. In addition, you are highly encouraged to attend ALL course lectures and visit faculty office hours.

How can I start my own study group?

The Academic Support Center staff will be glad to assist you in organizing a study group and providing a study group leader if one is available. Contact the ASC Director Kendra Wolgast for more information:

What are Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)?

PASS Sessions are a proactive approach to learning where students are given the opportunity to work together in a small group setting to academically support their efforts in particularly difficult courses. By attending PASS, students learn effective study skills, make efficient use of study time, and are provided opportunities to develop relationships with other students and staff.

PEER-assisted Study Sessions are... Peer-facilitated

The PASS leader neither lectures nor introduces new material. Instead, the PASS leader's responsibility is to organize and add structure to the sessions. The responsibility for processing class material and answering questions generated by the students remains with the students. The primary function of the PASS leader is to facilitate discussion among participants and model successful learning strategies at key moments in the session.

Who are PASS Leaders?

PASS leaders are students who have taken the course before and have met academic success. PASS leaders attend the lab course with you. This gives them insight into what you are currently studying and allows them to experience the class just as you do. Whether you have one question, or simply want to keep up with the material from week-to-week, you and your peers will work and think through things together.
