Peer Academic Advocates

The peer academic advocacy program provides the campus with cross-campus peer advocacy services that have the potential to positively affect student retention and academic performance of first-year baccalaureate undergraduates and provide student leadership opportunities for returning students, which will promote their sense of belonging and aid in their persistence to graduation.

Meeting with a Peer Academic Advocate makes a difference!

First-year students who met with a peer academic advocate had higher GPAS and higher retention rates than students who did not meet with a peer academic advocate.

3.28 GPA
3 or more times

3.09 GPA
1 or more times

2.08 GPA
DID NOT meet with the PAA

Peer Academic Advocates work with first-year students to ensure they understand the results of their LASSI assessment by working collaboratively with the student to create an academic action plan.

They will create a group chat for their assigned section of PSU8 where they will provide a platform for students to ask questions and the peer academic advocate can provide weekly academic/motivational tips, encourage academic and social engagement opportunities, and lead group chat discussions.

Peer Academic Advocates are available throughout the semester to meet one-on-one with any students needing assistance with their academic and social transitional needs.

The peer academic advocate assigned to each PSU8 course should not require any additional responsibilities of the faculty instructor. The peer academic advocate will serve as a resource to both the students of the course and faculty instructor.

Faculty will be notified of their PSU8 course assigned peer academic advocate at the beginning of the semester.

Faculty may consider: (1.) adding the peer academic advocate access to the Canvas page for the course. (2.) Require students enrolled in their PSU8 course meet regularly with the peer academic advocate throughout the semester. (3.) Ask the peer academic advocate for assistance with the delivery of some course content related to their experiences as a first-year student.

Students interested in becoming a Peer Academic Advocate must be available during move-in weekend before the fall semester (welcome weekend) for training and to assist with the Academic Institute.

Training is required by enrolling in specific, for credit, training courses.

Students must have the ability to commit 10 hours per week to their peer academic advocate duties during both the fall and spring semester.

Recruitment for peer academic advocates occurs every spring for the following academic year. If interested in applying, CLICK HERE.
