Academic Institute

The Academic Institute, organized and hosted by the Academic Support Center, provides incoming students the opportunity to feel better prepared as they start their first semester at Penn State Mont Alto. Students who participate will:

  • Increase their academic preparedness
  • Build confidence for the first day of class
  • Reduce academic anxieties about the collegiate transition

While registration is NOT required, students can pre-register for the sessions to guarantee a spot by visiting: Montalto.psu.edu/Aipre-reg   The first 40 students to pre-register and attend will receive a free gift from the ASC!

For more information on the Academic Institute, contact ASC Director, Kendra Wolgast.

Each 25-minute session is designed to be highly interactive and engaging. Students can create their own schedule by selecting the topics they are interested in learning more about.

Syllabus. Textbook. Open Education Resources. Faculty Office Hours. Canvas. Online Homework. Tutoring. Study Groups. It can all sound overwhelming until you are able to familiarize yourself with what’s available to help you on your academic journey.

Knowing what is happening inside and outside of the classroom is paramount. Learn how to set-up your campus email to manage the barrage of daily emails in your inbox.

Feeling excited AND anxious? You are not alone! Learn academic expectations of college students and turn the unknowns into knowns.

Faculty use Canvas in a variety of ways to help facilitate teaching and learning. Let’s explore your Canvas courses together and understand where to find announcements, assignments, modules, and more!

Regardless of what method you use, you must have some sort of plan on how to manage all of the responsibilities you will be juggling. Organization, time management, developing routines, creating daily to-do lists, setting goals...let us help you make a plan for success.

Now that you have your course schedule, let’s take a walk around campus and ensure you understand where all of your classes will be. We can also show you the office locations of faculty and your adviser.

Discover ways to increase your awareness of your own and others’ emotional, sensory and neurological aspects of function. We’ll find some fun ways to self-regulate that you can use in and out of the classroom including some make-and-takes.

There are many academic resources available to students designed to aid them in their academic success. Learn more about how faculty, the academic support center, and peers can support you to achieve your academic goals.

The day is broken into four blocks, each providing different topics to choose from. Students may choose one, two, or no sessions to attend in each time block. (GS: General Studies Building // AHB: Allied Health Building)
